Women in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark have recently launched a new organization with a new name: Episcopal Women Together (EWT), and an event. On May 30th, the Rev. Sara Lilja, Director of Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry NJ, will kickoff a postcard campaign. The event will provide an opportunity for participants to engage in advocacy on issues related to women. Details will be announced by separate email, and Facebook event invitation.
In a kickoff meeting on Saturday, February 25, 2017, 20 women gathered at Christ Church, Bloomfield & Glen Ridge for the re-birthing of what had been the diocesan "Women’s Commission." There was a lot of energy around being an active and engaged presence for and about women, not only in the diocese, but across the local, state, and national communities.
“We see ourselves as women of faith wanting to focus on action and be a resource on a variety of issues, while also focusing on self-care and finding the balance of work, family, faith and the issues we care about” said one participant after that initial meeting. The women decided on three general areas of focus for events and programs: Advocacy, Renewal & Restoration, and Faith.
On April 8th, the new name was decided, and the first events planned. In addition to the May 30th event, on June 21st, EWT is planning a Summer Solstice celebration, including a presentation on the divine feminine.
Additional events and programs are under consideration for the future, including educational opportunities (women saints and leaders of the church, work/life balance, etc.), advocacy (breaking the Episcopal stained glass ceiling, legislative action), and much more.
