March 6th, 7th and 8th, Friends of the Episcopal Church in Cuba attended the Episcopal Parish Network (formerly know as CEEP) in Houston, TX. With about 800 attendees from churches all across the US, this was a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of the current challenges facing our brothers and sisters in Cuba - and to generate support for three key programs: The Christmas Community Meal Program; The Water Purification System and Well Program; and the Companion Parish Program. We had a lot of meaningful discussions/conversations and will be following up over the coming weeks to try and transform some of those conversations into real support. The Diocese of NewarkA reflection on AAPI Episcopal experience - I am Father Paul Rajan, originally from south India, but I have served as a missionary priest among the Pacific Island communities in New Zealand for a long time. So, I included myself in the AAPI list. How did the AAPI community get to this place and phase in history to celebrate this month?
May 7 and May 10 are two significant dates in the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: The first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the first transcontinental railroad in the United States was completed, with significant contributions from Chinese pioneers, on May 10, 1869. In 1979, Congress passed a joint resolution directing the President to issue a proclamation designating the week of May 4-10, 1979 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. This practice was repeated annually until 1990, when Congress amended the resolution to expand the observance to the entire month of May. Dear Siblings in Christ, We are ever mindful of the terrible war between Israel and Hamas, to a lesser degree, Russia and Ukraine, and the many other countries where there is military conflict which is rarely mentioned. It is a time of serious instability and anxiety throughout the world. As Christians, we seek peace, and are united by our commitment to the integrity of all human life. Campus protests of the last weeks, here and across the nation, bring to the fore the complex issues of the Middle East that spill into our national and diocesan life. We strongly support the rights of people to disagree, dissent, and actively protest in the name of moral conviction. At the same time, we strongly urge those opposing this terrible war to separate the actions of any one government from its people. What happens when you've raised your children in church and encouraged their faith while they were at home...but they're not attending church once they're on their own? How can we strengthen the Body of Christ with our own practices and invite those we love to be a part of it? Beginning in June, the Diocese of New Jersey is hosting an evening online discussion group for support, fellowship, and conversation with each other, local clergy and family counseling professionals. If you'd like to know more as we continue to plan out the dates and times, please contact the Reverend Canon Susanna Cates. The Episcopal Dioceses of Western New York & Northwestern PennsylvaniaOn Tuesday, May 14 at 5 p.m., St. Philip's, Buffalo held a vigil outside the TOPS Supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo. The service will mark the second anniversary of the racially motivated mass shooting that took place at the store in 2022.
"The tragedy that occurred on May 14, 2022, is a stark and painful reminder that racism and hate crimes can happen anywhere," said the Rev. Stephen Lane, rector of St. Philip's. "It’s important to recognize these events, not only to mourn the loss and support those affected, but also to continue the conversation about racial justice and work towards a society where such acts of hate are no longer repeated." The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church has awarded our partnership dioceses a grant of $41,000 from the Roanridge Trust to support clergy coaching and a new preaching formation program in the Oil Region of Western Pennsylvania, the Genesee Region of Western New York, and the towns of DuBois and Brookville in Western Pennsylvania.
